Stud Dog Listing Directions & Requirements

Rationale:

  • The Stud Dog page is intended to broaden the awareness and availability of Lagotto Romagnolo males to breeders.
  • Increasing awareness of additional studs may help breeders have more choice when selecting a stud to sire a litter.
  • This can help to improve the genetic diversity in the population of Lagotto. Genetic diversity helps to maintain the health and longevity of breeding populations.
  • We have limited males available for stud service in the USA. In “closed populations” Coefficients of Inbreeding increase indicating loss of genetic diversity. Over generations there is increasing overlap of pedigrees in dog and bitch pairings. Importation of new bloodlines via new puppies is challenging given CDC policies. Want to avoid “Popular Sire Syndrome” to increase health and overall genetic diversity.

Stud Listing Requirements:

1. STUD DOG page will be open to LRCA members and non-members of the LRCA

a. If residing in the USA, STUD DOG owners are encouraged to be LRCA members

2. STUD DOGS listed and residing in the USA and Canada, need to have completed the LRCA health testing:

a. BREEDING STANDARD: Lagotto should not be bred before 18 months of age and without completing the requirements to qualify for a Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) number with normal/acceptable test results.

b. Hips (Fair, Good, Excellent), Patella (Normal)/PennHip median or less

BFJE, LSD, Eye Exam; others optional or recommended

3. Non-members in foreign countries may list their dogs, provided the following exist:

a. The foreign dog owner must be a member in good standing of their home country’s official Lagotto Romagnolo breed club.

b. The foreign dog owner will be encouraged to apply as an International LRCA member.

c. BREEDING STANDARD: Foreign dogs used by a (US) Breeder should have their country’s equivalent health testing with “Normal/Passing” results and meet the age requirements for evaluation/breeding. Dogs with foreign health screening results may qualify for CHIC upon submission of individual tests to the OFA for review as they review on a case-by-case basis. See link.

4. Equivalency of hip health testing shall be based on the OFA International Ratings Matix found here.

5. All stud dog owners shall provide links to personal websites, Social Media page, or other such public information sites.

6. Stud dog owners shall provide copies of pedigrees and all contact information. For International dogs, a copy of the dog’s registration may be requested for verification only but will not be published on the LRCA website.

7. Stud dog page will show photo and indicate if the dog has: sired via live cover, fresh chilled, frozen; how many litters sired by each method, if appropriate.

8. If frozen semen is available from a stud who passed before all LRCA Code of Ethics breeding guidelines were in place, the stud dog owner needs to list and submit date semen was collected, tests completed and date of the dog’s death.

9. The cost for stud dog listing shall be $50 for one (1) to three (3) dogs from same owner, and $5 for each additional dog.

10. The Stud Dog page would be open to the public, not just members to promote better genetic diversity globally.

Verification of Stud dog postings by LRCA is carried out in March of each year, the owners of the males must renew the membership by that date to continue to be present on this page.
